City Tax bill to be lower

The City of Paxton's portion of the local tax bill will be less next year.

City Attorney Bob Martensen presented the city's tax levy ordinance at the monthly council meeting this week.

The amount requested ($473,790) is $16,760 less than last year ($490,550).

It is also a drop from the $475,565 actually received from last year's levy.

The only major increase in the 2001 levy comes in the garbage fund - $45,300, up from $26,000 in 2000.

Decreases came in the library special fund ($71, 473, down from $80,000), insurance fund ($66,000, down from $76,000) and retirement - IMRF ($22,500 down from $42,500).

In other business, the council:

- Formally approved 10-year cable television franchise agreements with two companies - the current provider, Mediacom of Chillicothe, and Conxxus, a subsidiary of IlliCom, Paxton. Conxxus officials recently announced they plan to do an overbuild.

-Approved Mayor James Kingston's appointments to the Plan Commission - Julie White and Glenn Miller II - and the Zoning Board of Appeals -Phil Fessler.

-Agreed to seek bids to be opened in December for construction of a new public works garage on South Market Street.

-Set committee meetings. The finance committee will meet Oct. 15, the third time the date has been changed. The airport committee will also meet that night. The police committee will meet Oct. 22 to discuss the leaf burning issue and a request for stop signs at the Intersection of Spring and Center streets. The city property, parks and forestry committee will meet Nov. 5 to discuss current and future dead end streets. The meetings begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

-Learned there needs to be clarification on what the PBL School District is seeking regarding access to city streets near the soon-to-be constructed junior high school. The city property committee recently agreed to recommend the school district be allowed access to West Pells, State and Holmes streets. Martensen, who was unable to attend the first meeting, asked if the district is seeking pavement on the legal right of way. He said the property to the north of the high school is outside city limits.

-Approved seeking bids for a new city squad car to replace a unit with 70,000 miles on it.

-Set trick or treat hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Police Chief Ken Mutchmore said city police always have additional officers on duty on Halloween and the weekend prior. Emergency Response Service is also on duty, he said.
